WAIMATE INCREASE SHOWN

Registrations Of Births Comparative Figures For Nine Months Registrations of births in the Waimate district for the nine months ending September show a marked increase on the total for the corresponding period of 1944. Details supplied by the Registrar (Mr D. M. Webster? give a total of 109 births as compared with 78 for the corresponding nine months of 1944. Both marriages and deaths were below the figures of the 1944 period. At the end of September, 1944. 25 marriages had been registered; lor 1945 the total was 20. Deaths numbered 39, against 42 during the present year. The returns for the month of September, 1944, showed 12 births, two marriages and four deaths. During last month there were 14 births, no marriages, and five deaths. Presentation At Hook The popularity achieved by Mr and Mrs J. M. Tiffen and family during their long residence at Hook was shown by the large gathering which assembled in the Hook Soldiers’ Memorial Hall to bid them farewell before their departure for Southland. Regret at the departure of Mr and Mrs Tiffen and their two sons was expressed by the chairman, Mr F. A. Taylor, and best wishes for success in his new and larger undertaking at Tuatapere were extended. Messrs H. Mason, W. R. Todd and C. F. Ross joined in expressions of good will and paid a tribute to the service given in various district activities by Mr and Mrs Tiffen. Mr Tiffen, it was stated had been associated with practically every committee in the district, and had been ably seconded by Mrs Tiffen in the sphere of women’s activities. In wishing Mr Tiffen the best of good fortune in the future, the speakers, from their knowledge of the guest’s capabilities, were at one in expressing confidence in his success. The presentation of a roll of notes was made by Mr Rose, who asked Mr and Mrs Tiffen to purchase some memento of the many friends they were leaving in the Hook district. Mr Tiffen, in thanking the gathering for their good wishes and their handsome gift, said he was sorry to break the happy associations he had formed in his residence of more than 15 years at Hook. Music for the evening was provided by Mr D. Taylor. Social At Ikawai There was a large attendance in the Ikawai Hall on the occasion of a social evening held to extend a welcome home to Sergeant John Balfour, who returned from war service recently. The evening was spent in dancing, music being provided by an orchestra. Sergeant Balfour was welcomed on behalf „of residents of the district by Messrs C. J. Dugdale and T. B. Hamilton. Reference was made to the war service of the guest, and a hope was expressed; that he would soon settle down happily in civilian life. A presentation was made by Mr Dugdale, who was chairman of the gathering. Sergeant Balfour replied, thanking the speakers and those present for their welcome. He spoke appreciatively of the oarcels received from the local Red Cross and other organisations of the district, and thanked the women responsible for the welcome gifts. Rugby The annual Rugby match for the Allan Memorial trophy, given for competition between the leading teams in the Waimate and Timaru districts, will be played at Manchester Park tomorrow between Makikihi and Old Boys (Timaru). Late Frost A frost of seven degrees was experienced at Waimate yesterday. With traces of snow remaining on the Hunter’s Hills, cool conditions prevail, and although there has been considerable growth, a change to warmer weather is looked for by farmers and home gardeners. Frosts at this late season are not welcomed, and are likely to cause damage.
