LAWN TENNIS MAORI PARK COURTS

Association To Meet Reserves Committee The Town Clerk of 'Timaru (Mr J. M. Jenkins) has been advised by tlie secretary of the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association (Mr P. W. Young) that the Association has now screened a considerable quantity of soil, probably sufficient to top-dress the courts at Maori Park; also that members of the Association and tennis players are naturally busy with their own work and it is impossible for them at this stage to undertake any further work in connection with top-dressing, much as they would like to do so. The Association also drew the Council’s attention to the terms of the lease referring to the maintenance of Maori Park, and suggested that the Council take suitable action under this heading. This action by the Association followed the decision of the annual meeting last week, and at a meeting' of the Management Committee last night it was further agreed that the Town Clerk be requested to arrange for the Reserves Committee of the Council to receive a deputation from the Association. The chairman (Mr D. T. Gardner) said that they wanted the courts by November, but after the rain of the last few days they may not now be ready until after Christmas; the soil had to be put on immediately. Mr R. A. Armstrong urged the committee to endeavour to meet the Borough Council in open meeting, but on the motion of Mr J. S. Satterthwaite it was agreed that a deputation should wait on the Reserves Committee. On Mr Satterthwaite’s motion the Association levy was restored tc the pre-war 2/6 a senior player, this following the raising of the N.Z.L.T.A levy from id to 3d. Tire opening of Maori Park for the season will be the occasion of a gala tennis day, the proceeds of which will be used to cover the expenses of the Association in preparing the courts. T. Brooks, of Dunedin, offered his professional coaching services for a period in December. Schools and clubs in the district will be advised that the Association is contemplating engaging him for a fortnight and asked to advise the number of their junior players who would be interested in participating in the scheme. Messrs P. W. Young and A. N. Leslie were elected the Association delegates to the N.Z.L.T.A. Messrs D. T. Gardner and J. S. Satterthwaite will represent the Association on the South Canterbury Council of Sport.
