A BETTER HARBOUR
Lyttelton Improvement Scheme (N.Z.P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH Oct. 3. Plans to enlarge Lyttelton Harbour and make it “a real gateway to the South Island" were put before a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board by the Improvement Committee to-day. Before work on the tunnel road was commenced, the inner harbour must be enlarged by the construction of two moles or breakwaters, stated the report presented by the committee. This would necessitate the dredging of a new channel and the general layout of the existing wharves and sheds must be reviewed with the ultimate aim of providing direct road access to shipping, added the report. "This is an Important report,” commented the chairman. Mr W. S. MacGibbon. “It is a step in the right direction to make Lyttelton an important harbour. I am sure that in the next few years we will not be having criticism of the size of the berthing basin in the harbour that we have had in the past.” The board planned to make Lyttelton the premier port in the South Island, added Mr Mac Gibbon. The port must be improved to accommodate the large ships which would be coming in the future to New Zealand from overseas The board decided that a report on the enlargement of the harbour be prepared by the resident engineer (Mr A. J. Charman) and the consultingengineer (Mr P. W. Fryer) with a third engineer to be decided'
