TEMUKA RENEWED DRIVE

National Savings Campaign Function In Post-war Period A drive to increase the amount of National Savings invested at the Temuka Post Office, particularly those of the many savings groups active in the district, has been made by the Temuka National Savings Committee, j and it was stated yesterday by the 1 Postmaster (Mr A. F. Wells) that this popular form of investment was going to play as large a part in the post-war years as it played in providing the sinews of war during the period of hostilities. “There is a place for National Savings in the post-war period,” said Mr Wells. “Apart from its appeal to the patriotism of the people during the I war, this form of investment was I esteemed by many people both for its security and for the relatively liberal interest rate allowed. The need for restricted spending still exists, not only because it is in the interests of us all to avoid inflation ... a greater danger now than during the war . . . but more particularly from the point of | view of rehabilitation. “Just as every £ invested duing the [ war helped to provide the money for 1 the huge expenditure necessary to fully equip our troops," continued Mr Wells, I “so. during the first few years of the I peace, every £ invested will assist our returning servicemen to satisfy their urgent needs and set themselves up in civilian life. The continuance of National Savings at the same level as during the war is desirable both for the financial welfare of the Dominion and for the future prosperity of every individual person in it. There is still a scarcity of consumer goods and money invested in National Savings keeps prices down and prevents inflation. “In spite of the natural reaction of investors immediately after the conclusion of hostilities, when there Was a drop in the monthly amount invested, deposits at the Temuka Post Office are keeping up,” said Mr Wells. “It is hoped that when the public realise their value as a peacetime investment, they will regain or even exceed their former level. Although the third week in September showed the exceptionally low weekly investment of £B4. investments for the month of September exceeded the target of £Bl2 by £134.” More Men Return An additional seven men, members of the Dominion Monarch draft from the Middle East and the United Kingdom, returned to Temuka on Monday evening.
