LOADING DELAYED

Cranedrivers Decline Overtime (N.Z.P.A.) AUCKLAND, Sept 27 A large proportion of the cranedrivers employed by the Auckland Harbour Board elected not to work overtime to-night, and a number of holds in vessels at Auckland were worked only with the ship’s winches between 6 and 9 o'clock. This resulted in a number of gangs and the speed or working being reduced. About 33 men were required, but only 11 worked. The drivers of mobile cranes and tractors were also affected. “It is not a case of concerted action and the men are not following any decision of the Union,” said the secretary of the Auckland Harbour Board Employees' Union. Mr W. Ashton He believed that 87 out of a total of HP were involved. There had been a bit of argument over the question of providing reliefs for drivers when of necessity they had to leave their cabins Relief drivers would save the cranes and waterside workers’ gangs from being idle during those times and prevent the waste of thousands of man hours every year.
