BAR TO VICTORIA CROSS
Captain Upham Honoured Third Recipient In History (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, September 26. rpHE award of a Bar to the Victoria Cross which is, * in effect, a second Victoria Cross, has been made to Captain Charles Hazlitt Upham, V.C., of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Announcing this to-day, the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) said: “The Victoria Cross was conferred on Captain Upham for conspicuous bravery during operations in Crete in May, 1941, and the award of a Bar was a most exceptional honour. The citation to the latest award added to his previous glorious exploits, and stamped him as one of our bravest and most outstanding leaders.” Captain Upham returned to New Zealand on September 2. His address is 32 Gloucester Street, Christchurch.
The Bar to tne Victoria Cross has been awarded for gallantry in action at El Ruweisat Ridge on the night of July 14 r l5, 1942.
