SUGAR-BEET
Experimental Plot At Temuka (F.0.P.R.) WELLINGTON. Sept. 26. “The question of establishing the sugar-beet industry in New Zealand has been receiving the close attention of the Government, and the claims of the Temuka district as a suitable location in which to establish the industry are not being overlooked,” said the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) in reply to Mr J. Acland in the House to-day. “Arrangements are now being made to cultivate with sugar-beet two full scale areas, each of 10 acres, one of which will be in the vicinity of Temuka. The purpose of these tests is to ascertain under New Zealand conditions the actual time and cost involved in growing and harvesting sugar-beet with the full use of mechanised methods of cultivation. Special machines have been developed in the United States of America during the last few years, and these arc being procured in ordei' thoroughly to test out their merits.”
