GOOD FINANCIAL POSITION

Caledonian Society Championship Cycling Needed “Taking into consideration the difficulties of sports societies during the year you will agree that our position is an excellent one.” said Mr N. Burns (president) presenting the seventieth annual report and balance-sheet of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society last evening. “We are showing a profit of £2427-/16. It places the Society on a sound footing and enables us at this period to plan for a grand peace meeting on New Year’s Day.

“Sports of every description are staging a comeback,” continued the president, “and the New’ Year sports should be outstanding. Last New Year's Day the meeting was an excellent one, and we had congratulations from competitors in outlying districts on the way in which they were conducted. We are on the crest of a wave, and we can look forward to the 1946 meeting as being one of the best in the history of the Society.” Stating that he hadfrhad a fair term of office and wished to stand down. Mr Burns declined nomination for election as president for the coming year. Members spoke highly of Mr Burns’ work and asked him to reconsider his decision. He agreed to take on the position for another year, and was unanimously re-elected president. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr N. Burns; vice-pre-sidents, Messrs W. H. Hall and R. Oliphant; treasurer, Mr R. A. delegates to the South Canterbury Centre, Amateur Athletic Union. Messrs C. E. Hall and S. F. Hanson; delegates to South Canterbury Centre, Piping and Dancing Association, Messrs R. Grant and E. Fairbrother; delegates to the South Canterbury Council of Sport, Messrs H. H. Fraser and N. Burns; finance and emergency committee, Messrs N. Burns, R. Oliphant, C. E. Hall, W. H. Hall, R. A. Rodgers and M. McKenna. The retiring directors were re-elected.

Championship Cycling At the conclusion of the annual meeting, a meeting of the directors of the Society was held to discuss the programme for the New Year Sports. “Could we not run a second day’s sports,” suggested Mr J. Glass. “It may be worth consideration later on, but it will be as well to carry on as in previous years.” said the president.

Mr C. Hardingham: What chance have we of getting New Zealand championships at the meeting? Christchurch gets them, and we were told that we could not get them. “Well, we really do not want them at present,” said the secretary (Mr H. H. Fraser), “we would have to take all the championships or nothing at all.” “You will get more entries,” commented a delegate.

“No more than we have now. We have full entries,” replied the secretary. “We want North Island riders. I know of one cyclist who guarantees a team from Auckland,” said Mr Hardingham.

“South Island riders are a long way ahead of North Island ones,” said the secretary. “Do you want the whole of the New Zealand championships? There are seven?” “In the North Island there are no heats. Canterbury may be going to try it here.” said Mr Hardingham. Saying that it would raise the standard of cycling, Mr J. Glass moved that the Society apply to the New Zealand Centre for one or two championships, either New Zealand or Island. A further remit was offered by Mr E. Fairbrother, “that the New Zealand Centre be asked that the championships be distributed and not all allotted to one Society as in the past.” Both remits were approved.
