POLICE FORCE
Poor Pay Alleged (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON. Sept. 25. Referring to the report of the Police Department presented in the House to-day, Mr R. M. Algie (National, Remuera) said it was conceded by all that we had a first class Police Force in New Zealand, but the salary received was out of all proportion to the service given. He quoted recent newspaper correspondence which pointed out that members of the Police Force were expected to work 20 years to achieve a salary increase of £65. He moved that the report be referred back to the Government for consideration. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) said he could not produce detailed figures of police wages and salaries at the moment, but would be pleased to do so at a later date. Mr Algie’s motion was defeated on the voices.
