Renewed Interest Association Holds Annual Meeting Revived interest in tennis was shown in the Temuka district last season and a successiul season was disclosed in the report of the Temuka Town and Country Tennis Association, presented i at the annual meeting held at Winchester. Ten teams competed in the shield competition. Geraldine were the winners of the North End section and Clandeboye of the South End. The final was played at Winchester and Geraldine won the shield for the first time. The women’s section of the annual doubles tournament was won by Mrs Seward and Mrs Woods (Milford). The men’s final had to be abandoned owing to rain. "It is with a feeling of pride we think of the accomplishments of the New Zealand Divisions overseas and to those who have suffered bereavement we extend our deepest sympathy,” continues the report. “We thank the Geraldine Club for the interest taken by it in the affairs of the Association, and congratulate the Clandeboye Club on fielding two teams. Our sincere thanks are extended to our delegate in Timaru (Mr R. Armstrong), to officers of the Association, club delegates and all who assisted during the year.” Tire balance-sheet, showing a credit of £l2/1/6, was adopted. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr E. Turner; vice-pre-sidents, Miss E. Langrell, Messrs R. Stokes and W. Rule; secretary, Mr H. Penticost; treasurer, Mr W. Rule; selection committee, Messrs Turner, Penticost, Rule, Stokes and Donehue; delegates to South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. Messrs E. Turner and R. Armstrong. Technical Association "It is a healthy sign that, although the wool-classing class conducted by the Temuka Technical Association has been in existence* for 40 years, it can still attract a full roll of members,” said Mr J. T. Smart, chairman of the Board of Managers, in presenting certificates gained during the last wool-classing session. Mr Smart paid a tribute to the high quality of the teaching given by the instructor- (Mr J. Farrell) and spoke of the wide range of material which he made available to the class. “Very few centres are as fortunate as Temuka in the variety and quality of wool used by the students,” he said. Mr G. P. Moore made a presentation to Mr Farrell on behalf of the class, and expressed appreciation of the keen interest he took in the progress of the students. Certificates .were awarded as follows: Second year. W. J. Hanifin, N. Palmer, A. R. Smart, C. D. Smith; third year, J. Goodman, S. Goodson,.H, Goodson. R. Goodson, C. Wade and G. P. Moore. In addition to the wool-classing class, with a membership of 20, the woodwork classes conducted by the Association both at Temuka and Geraldine, under Mr D. J. Walker, are attracting increasing numbers. The dressmaking class, under Miss C. M. Draffin. has recently commenced its third term. The nutrition class, conducted by Miss McLean, was interrupted by frost damage to the cookery room at the Temuka District High School, but it is hoped to complete the course when repairs are completed. Drama Group The Temuka Drama Group is busy rehearsing six plays. Extra classes in make-up and stage craft are being taken by Mr G. A. Worthington, Drama Tutor for the Canterbury University Extension Department, and keenness is being shown by the 25 members of the Temuka group. The first public presentation will be given at a patriotic concert next month. The other plays will be presented at a special drama night to be held by the group. Rural Mail Deliveries Although both rivers and creeks were falling yesterday morning, there was a large amount of surface water on the roads. The rural mail car was unable to make full deliveries in the Hilton district owing to the depth of water over the road at Sharpe’s Bridge. Salvation Army Social A well-attended social evening was held in the Salvation Army Hall on Monday to welcome Corporal M. Shepherd, who has just returned from overseas. A community sing was enjoyed under the leadership of Mr Mason. Mrs M. Shepherd sang “The Stranger of Galilee.” Mr Butler welcomed the guest of the evening and expressed best wishes for his future. Arowhenua Institute At the monthly meeting of the Arowhenua Women's Institute Mrs Boulton presided and welcomed a new member, Mrs Chapman. Com etitions resulted as follows:—Large bloom, Mrs Beeby 1, Miss Greaves 2, Mrs Anglem 3; small bloom, Mrs Anglem h Mrs Rehu 2. Mrs Beeby 3; prettiest cosy, MrS Williams 1. Patriotic Euchre Winners at the patriotic euchre party held in the Labour Hall were Miss A. Howden, and Mrs L. Hopkinson, Mr C. Talbot and Mr J. Bradshaw. Mystery prizes were won by Mrs C. Talbot and Mr J. Coffey. A competition was won by Mrs D. Scannell. Personal Miss H. Beattie, Main Road, Temuka, is spending a holiday at Ngapara. HUNTER Women’s Institute A successful dance was held in the Hunter Hall by the Women’s Institute to celebrate its birthday. Items were contributed by Miss Marie Fraser (tap dancing), Miss C. Gerrie (recitation), Mr N. Malthus and Mr B. Hayman (songs). Mfes B. Phillips was the accompanist. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr C. Lyons and Miss B. Flynn. Music was supplied by Mr D. Taylor and extras were played by Mr D. Kroon. Mr I. McNeill acted as M.C. Euchre Tournament Prizewinners at the last euchre tournament were Mr W. Jackson and Mrs Horsburgh. The consolation prizes were awarded to Mr A. Gilchrist and Mrs J. McNeill. Winners of the aggregate prizes were Mr W. Jackson and Mrs Horsburgh. HOOK Tennis Club There was a good attendance at a meeting to revive the Hook Tennis Club. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr G McKenzie; president, Mr L. Rathgen; vice-president, Mr J. McKenzie; secretary, Mr S Taylor; assistant secretary, Mr C. Todd; committee. Mrs H. Henderson, Mrs H. Mason, Miss A. McKenzie, Miss Jean McKenzie and’ Mr A. Kingsbury; club captain, Mr R Gabites. The club is in a sound financial position and an opening date will be arranged later when the courts have peen repaired. The president and Mr E. C. Wilkin were appointed delegates to the Waihao Lawn Tennis SubAssociation.
