£100 PRIZE MONEY OFFERED
Wood Chopping At Sports A decision to increase the prize money for the wood-chopping events by £79 at the Caledonian society's New Years Day sports was made at a meeting of the directors of the Society last evening. "We have the opportunity of gaming the premier wood-chopping contest lor New Zealand,” said Mr o. F. Hansen. “It is a chance for us to boost Timaru and make it the venue of the best chopping event in New Zealand if we make the prize money worm while. For the main chop I think that it should be in the vicinity of £lOO as an inducement for the best choppers to come here.” “It is a feature that we should make a job of,’’-said the president (Mr N. Burns). Mr M. McKenna endorsed Mr Hansen's remarks. They needed something big if they were going to start out on their own. All the societies were starting to climb up the ladder, but with a e-ood inducement the best chonpers from Southland and the West Coast would be-attracted to the New Year meeting. The Society would have to make it a limit handicap, so as to cut out the “smaller fry.” Mr H. H. Fraser: There will be no limit to the competition, but there will have to be a limit to the start to bring the best together. Mr Hansen: There will be other chop events for all the competitors.
After further discussion, in which it was agreed that the main chopping event would not affect the prize money for other events, it was agreed that the prize money for the main woodchopping event be increased to £lOO.
