Competitions Festival Sword Dance Championship The Timaru Competitions were well attended on Saturday, particularly m the evening, the last before , the demonstration concert to-night, whicn brings a successful festival io a close, ihe piping and brass instrument ecticn weie di ided during the day. and the audience saw the finals of the South Canterbury Championship Sword Dance, under 18. and trie Irish Reel for teams of any age competing tor the Leo Collins Cuo. Mr W. C. Burke, judge of the bras, instrument section, said he considered .he penormauce put up by all competitors of a uniformly high standard and said the ci editable performances of the winners made placings extremely difficult. In the South Canterbury Sword Dance Championship the winners gave an outstanding interpretation of the Scottish dance of victory, said the judge of the national section. Mrs Bruce Scott. Their work was neat throughout and they danced close in to the swords. The four dancers comprising the winning team in the Irish Reel also set a high standard and gained a well-deserved place by entering wholeheartedly into the spirit of the dance.
