TLMUKA SUNDAY BOWLS

Motion Defeated Club’s Annual Meeting A motion that Sunday play be permitted on the Temuka Bowling Green was defeated by a small majority at the annual meeting of the Temuka Bowling Club. The suggestion was raised by the secretary (Mr A. H. Gardiner,, who said that most progressive clubs in New Zealand permitted Sunday play.

It was strongly supported by Mr J. Fisher, who said that tennis and golf were played on Sunday. "We are striving lor a new world order." said Mr Fisher. “Let us help to make it and enjoy ourselves by being permitted to play bowls on Sunday. We could stipulate that the green is not open during church hours, but the time has come when this progressive move should be made.”

The newly-elected president (Mr H. E. Pitt) said that many clubs were adopting it. but that did riot necessarily mean that the Temuka Club should do so. They would have more to pay for upkeep' of the green if play was allowed seven days a week, he said.

So far as he was concerned, it would be a matter of principle not to take part in Sunday play, said Dr. A. S. Mclnnes. Bowlers generally had plenty of time to play during the week.

The Rev. W. F. Nichol said that he took up the attitude that every man could please himself what use he made of Sunday, but he would certainly vote

against the motion. He instanced the Waimate Bowling Club, where Sunday play had been voted out some years ago because of its effect on the green. Mr R. Longson asked whether the Domain Board had a rule to prevent Sunday play.

Mr Nichol: The Domain Board would have to be asked for permission. Messrs Fisher and G. Price then moved that the club allow Sunday plav, Mr Nichol objecting that the resolution should take the form of a notice of motion to the next annual meeting. “This is a far-reaching question and it is advisable to have the opinion of the whole club.” he said. On the chairman ruling that the motion was in order, it was lost on a show of hands by five votes to seven. Clothing For Europe “The assortment of clothing sent from Temuka to be distributed by UNRRA in the devastated countries of Europe was a credit to the town and district and particularly to those members of the Lady Galway Guild and the Temuka Sub-centre of the Red Cross Society who sorted and packed them.” said the Mayor (Mr G. A. Harris) in paying a tribute to the response to the appeal. Mr Harris said that the members of the Lady Galway Guild forwarded 1096 garments and 66 pairs of boots and shoes. The Red Cross Sub-centre was responsible for the forwarding of practically a similar number. The women of the district had done a wonderful job in the limited time at their disposal. They had worked long hours in sorting, cleaning and mending the garments sent in, and congratulations had been received from the Christchurch centre of the Guild on the excellent condition in which the goods had been received.
