Benevolent Society “We have advocated this move for many years.” stated the annual report of the Waimate Ladies’ Benevolent Society, in expressing satisfaction that a district nurse had been appointed and had commenced duties. Only four meetings had been held during the year, that being sufficient to deal with business, according to the report. Six families were helped during the period, receiving clothing, groceries, coal, blankets and parcels of used clothing. Gifts had been made to four families at Christmas. The balance-sheet showed an increase of £l7 in the credit balance with which the year had commenced. Regret was expressed at the resignation of the secretary and treasurer. Mrs C. Coventry, after carrying out those duties for more than 22 years. Mrs C. Douglas had been elected in her place. Mrs E. C. Studholme was re-elected president, with Mesdames E. C. d'Auvergne and T. S. Medlicott as vicepresidents. The committee comprises Mesdames F. Nash. A. H. Acheson. Mrs C. C. Douglas was re-elected secretary and treasurer. Social At Hook A well attended dance was held in the Hook Hall to welcome home Private J. G. Macke».vie, who for three and a half years was a prisoner of war in Italy and Germany. Mr C. F. Rose said that in the progress of the war, there had been many anxieties, thrills and disappointments. Their guest had been a long time held prisoner, and the speaker was glad to express their un-

bounded pleasure that he had returned safely. It had been due to their own common sense in realising the uselessness of further resistance against overwhelming odds, that their guest and his companions had returned, said Mr W. Richards. After the prolonged battle of wits to evade doing more than the minimum work, or none at all, for their captors, had come the “horror” march, which proved that Britishers could endure hardship, help

one another, and bear trials with the same endurance as in the past. Mr Richards made the presentation of the customary’ envelope, stating that the gift earned with it the best wishes of all. Mrs W. R. Todd spoke on behalf of the Red Cross Society and presented a gift from members of that organisation. Private Mackenzie, in his reply, eulogised the work of the Red Cross, and credited his survival to their parcels. The evening was snent in dancing. Music was supplied by Mrs C. F. Rose and Miss E. Henderson; and Messrs M. Horn and A. J. Bumess, jnr. Mr J. M. Tiffen was M.C.
