Governor-General Pays Farewell Visit APIA. August 24. The Governor-General. Sir Cyril Newall, arrived on Monday on a farewell visit to Western Samoa, and departed early on Wednesday. ■. On Tuesday morning their Excellencies attended an entertainment by school children at Malifa School, and in the afternoon the Samoan people assembled at Mulinuu in large numbers for a farewell ceremony. A speech of welcome was made bv the Hon. Tualaulelei, M.L.C.. expressing thanks for the splendid work done bv the Governor-General for the benefit of Samoa. The speech was followed by a presentation of the King’s kava in honour of the distinguished visitor. After a speech by Orator Mataafa. the Governor-General spoke of the sacrifices made by Gaeat Britain and New’ Zealand to help win the war. He told his audience how’ anxious New Zealand was to assist the Samoan people to attain their aim of selfgovernment, which could only be arrived at by unity’ amongst themselves and more education to fit them for the work. A reception and dance for Europeans, held at the Tivoli Theatre in the evening, was very well attended. Her Excellency, the Administrator and Mrs A. C. Turnbull accompanied the Governor-General to ml functions.
