MONTGOMERY IN PLANE CRASH

Slight Injuries (7.30 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 23. Field-Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery was slightly injured when his plane crashed into a tree at an airport near Oldenburg. He delayed his visit to the Canadians long enough to receive cursory first aid, after which he

carried on his programme, including a 30 minute speech, an inspection of the guard of honour and the presentation of medals. Later he returned to hospital for a more detailed patching up before attending a luncheon. Field-Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery will visit Prague on Saturday to receive from Dr Edouard Benes, the Czechoslovakian President, the newlyinstituted Golden Star of the Order of the White Lion of Victory. The decoration is the highest than can be awarded by the President, and Sir Bernard Montgomery will be the first recipient. Field-Marshal Montgomery was Xrayed after returning to his headquarters by air, revealing a slight injury to the spine and was sent to bed. He commented: “I am lucky to be alive. My plane is a complete wreck.”
