“CEASE FIRE” IN BURMA

The commander of the Japanese forces in Burma Lieutenant-General Kimura has confirmed the “cease fire” order in Burma in a message received at 10.30 a.m. this morning. This is the first direct communication received by the Allies from the enemy forces in Burma. Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten is expected to receive the surrender of the Japanese forces in South-east Asia from General Tetsuchi at Singapore early in September, says Reuter’s Rangoon correspondent. The Burma campaign cost the Japanese 128,000 killed, states an official announcement. In heavy fighting during the breakout, for each Allied soldier killed 150 Japanese fell or were taken prisoner.
