MINERS’ PAY

Increase To Be Met By Subsidy (N.Z.P.A.) WESTPORT, Aug. 23. The Mining Controller, Mr C. 11. Benney, said to-day that he had been advised by the Acting-Minister of Mines (the Hon. J. O’Brien; that, the Government had decided to meet the extra cost arising out of the recent increases of 7'd in hewing rates and 16 a shift to other workers by means of a subsidy. The increased rates of pay approved by the Government in respect of the State coal mines and authorised bv the Coal Mines Council for privately-owned mines followed a pronouncement by the Arbitration Court concerning wages generally, and is retrospective to May 7 last. Mr Benney said that the subsidy would be computed on a tonnage basis to compensate for the actual increased cost, and that a circular setting out the procedure would be issued shortly bv the Mines Department.
