Rebuilding Armed Forces
Enemy Designs Suspected (7.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 15. Japanese broadcasts implying vaguely that Nippon is already looking to rebuilding her armed forces is receiving close attention by American officials. Some military and diplomatic authorities dislike the tone of Kushuo Oya in saying: “This mistake we must amend.” They are similarly offended by Suzuki's remark: “This day has become a day that never will be forgotten by the Japanese people.” The Associated American Press points out the significance of the army’s statement that care must be taken that no treachery is planned. Forces must be available to stamp out inexorably and completely any enemy uprising. The Army and Navy are confident that the atomic bomb, if necessary, will root out any Japanese holding out against the Emperor’s orders. The “Ashi Shimbun” has no illusions concerning the result, commenting: “What the Japanese are confronted with is not a negotiated peace, but a one-sided defeat. The Japanese should realise this stark reality and unite under the guidance of the Emperor in order to survive great trials.”
