RICCARTON NOTES

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 15.

The Riccarton tracks will be closed for two days in connection with the peace celebrations.

Tlie course proper is available this week for the two-year-olds and trainers are taking advantage of the chance to give their youngsters some useful work.

L. J. Ellis returned home yesterday, after a week in hospital. He has lost weight and he will require a few weeks of rest before he is back to normal health.

Mr J. M. Samson’s Robingay, a three-year-old by Robin Goodfellow' from Gay Paper, in G. Ridgway’s stable, has been gelded and after a short rest he will resume work. He is a good looker and he has shown promise of being useful.

Eastern Slipper, who has had a rest, after some unsuccessful racing earlier in the season, has joined B. H. Brodie's stable. She is a four-year-old Paper Slipper mare, who will be raced by her breeder, Mr J. Drinnan, of St. Andrews. Her dam. Rahab, is the only living foal of Humility, an imported mare by Free From Pride, son of Charles O'Malley. The Solicitor General three-year-old Deerfoot, a half-brother to Wild Chase, has been resting for a few weeks, following trouble in a hock. He was gelded yesterday and H. and A. Cutis hope to have him back in work soon. Mr C. Holdsworth has placed the two-year-old brown filly, Lorna Leigh, in J: m. Olive’s stable. She is by Battle Song from Lady Leigh, a good but unsound mare. The newcomer is of average size and greatly resembles her dam, who comes from a great racing family, being a descendant of Lady Zet land. Kindergarten, who has been under the care of L. J. Ellis for some time, left to-day on his way back to his owner in Gisborne. The Kincardine horse, the best performer in the Dominion in recent years, has been unsound through a great part of his career. He has not raced since he won the James Hazlett Gold Cup in January, and as he is now eight years old. he may be retired. Little Secret has been placed with A. B kcve, with a view’ to spring engagements, starting with Achburtori or Geraldine next month. He competed at the recent, Grand National meeting without showing up prominently.
