HEROISM OF MOTHERS
Tribute By Mayor “I desire to pay a tribute to the quiet heroism of the mothers who bore brave sons, who responded to the call of their country and smilingly braved the ordeal of cheering onward with unquestioning devotion the sons they were never to see again,” states the Mayor of Timaru (Mr A. E. S. Hanan) in a Victory message to tlie citizens of Timaru. “We know that these mothers lived through anxious times. We know too, that war is an ugly and devastating business. We know of its horrors, and we know of its glories, and we know that it brings out in the individual the best that is in manhood and womanhood. “During the war the response of Timaru women has been wonderful. The packing of patriotic parcels, the knitting and spinning of garments, the conducting of work of providing tea at the patriotic shop days, the untiring station and the transporting and entertaining of servicemen is a record of which anyone should be proud. “The success of the patriotic effort in Timaru is largely due to the women of this town. The citizens and servicemen acclaim their praise with thanks.”
