MANY FUNCTIONS ARRANGED

Victory Programme Celebrations For To-day

In the Timaru peace celebrations to-day an appropriate note will be struck at the first official function in Memorial Avenue at 9 a.m., when representatives of the Returned Services’ Association, the South Canterbury Homeservicemen’s Association, the Mayor (Mr A. E. S. Hanan), and Borough Councillors will place wreaths on the Great War Memorial as a tribute to those who have fallen in both wars.

The Citizens’ Thanksgiving Service will be held in King George’s Place at 10 a.m. when the Mayor will deliver a short address. The accompaniment to the hymns will be provided by the Timaru Municipal Band, and members of the Timaru Choral Society will lead the singing. A thanksgiving and prayers will be offered by the Rev. L. A. Barnes (president of the Timaru Ministers’ Association) and a Scripture reading will be given by the Rev. I. G. Borrie (secretary of the Association). In the afternoon, assembling at 2 o'clock, a grand Victory procession, in which all organisations, business houses, sports bodies, the general

public and school children are invited to co-operate, will be held, proceeding from Stafford Street (south of Woollcombe Street), via Cannon and Sophia Streets, to the Timaru Municipal Chambers, where all marching sections will be drawn up. In King' George’s Place, addresses will be given, and a Savage Club mock court, community singing, impromptu concerts and open air dancing will be held, as a fitting conclusion to the procession. To-night, a torchlight procession, leaving King George’s Place at 7.30 o’clock, with the Timaru Municipal Band, torch bearers, citizens, groups, and any accompanying vehicles will proceed to Caroline Bay where, weather permitting, a bonfire will be held, to be lit by the Mayor' at 8 o'clock. An urgent appeal is made to all drivers of lorries and truck owners to assist In transporting material for the bonfire by reporting to “The Pines,” College Road, at 9 a.m. to-day, to load their vehicles. It is suggested that the public might co-operate by bringing suitable material direct to the Bay. Until the torchlight procession arrives at the Bay hill, the Timaru Highland Pipe Band will provide music. To meet the convenience of the public the municipal bus service will operate an half-hourly service commencing from 9 a.m. until noon on all routes with the exception of Grasmere Street. From noon till 10.30 p.m. the service usual on Fridays will be operated on all routes with the exception of Page’s Road. Buses will arrive at and depart from King George’s Place.
