VICTORY HOLIDAYS
Regulations Gazetted N.Z.P.A.—Special Correspondent (7.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 14. National Security Reguiations have been gazetted to provide for methods of observance of the two holidays that will follow' the official announcement of the end of the war in the Pacific. The regulations provide for employer and employee to have two days’ holiday without loss of pay or, if circumstances make it necessary for people to work for them to be paid at holiday rates. Those who stay away from work longer than the regulation two days will lose their holiday pay. A difficult food problem has been caused by uncertainty about the two days’ holiday. Both retailers and wholesalers of perishable food are in doubt about the quantities they should buy, and consumers are likely to suffer. The position is complicated by the fact that to-morrow is in any case a bakers’ holiday. It is probable that most city restaurants will be closed on both days of the holiday. Not Sufficient Beer All hotels will be closed on the first day, but will open on the second day. There is not sufficient beer for both days, and it is thought that on the second day the rush for beer will not be So great and drinking will be more rational. Schools will close for two 1 days after the announcement of the , cessation of hostilities. The Federal Government has decided that the national thanksgiving service , for the end of the Pacific war will be ; held on the second of the two holidays. The service will be held in the war : memorial. Canberra, and will be attended bv Mr J. B. Chiflev. Ministers : and members of Parliament. The Duke I of Gloucester has been invited to attend. Special thanksgiving services i will be held in all churches on Victory ' in the Pacific Day.
