NEW BUILDINGS NEEDED

Timaru Technical College Board Of Managers Meet

"The matter that has been most before our minds during the ’.ear has been the need for new buildings." said the chairman of the Board of Managers of the Timaru Technical College, Mr P. R. Talbot, at the annual meeting last evening.

"The board.” be continued, "has made repented representations to the Education Department and indirectly to the Minister on this subject, and the South Canterbury members of Parliament, the Rev. Clyde Carr. Messrs D. C. Kidd and J. Acland. visited the school in November last and promised their full support. In March of this tear the Department.nl architect conferred with the Board and since then we have been advised that, the whole matter has been referred to the Public Works Department: for a report. During the recent visit of the inspectors opportunity was taken to discuss the budding proposals with them, and they agreed to do all they could to assist us. We are grateful to all those organisations who are lending their support to our efforts.

"The Education Department is fully aware of the urgency of our needs,” Mr Talbot continued, "and I am conIKiem Tv>i the Bo.nd's efforts throughout tlie vrar iir.’.T carried the cause of tcchiiica! education a step nearer its

goal—that is a new Technical College lor Timaru. I appeal to the public bodies and the public generally to do all in their power to continue to support the Board of Managers in their efforts to : sure adequate accommodation for a growing school.” In presenting his annual report, Mr Talbot said that during the year there had been many staff changes but the work of the College continued efficiently. Staff changes were inevitable and they had been fortunate in securing first-class teachers to replace those who had left. Students had taken their full share in civic activities whenever opportunity or the need had arisen. During the year students had played a creditable part in musical, dramatic and patriotic activities in the town and. in addition, had lent their full assistance to various worthy causes. Experience gained in these activities was sound training for good citizenship in after life. Mr Talbot was again elected chairman of the Board. Principal's Report The annual report of the Technical College was presented by the principal (Mr G. Hill). It mentioned that the students had raised £B6 0 5 for the Patriotic Fund. and. in response to the UNRRA Appeal, had made a substantial contribution of clothing. Every opportunity was taken to'interest the students in the activities of the town and district, and it, was by active participation in such things as patriotic efforts. UNRRA and drama festivals, that, real training for citizenship could be given. During the year the Old Students’ Association had been revived. An active committee had been formed and already several successful functions had been held.
