HOUSES NOT BEING BUILT
Returned Soldiers Seek Reason “The first essential to the success of rehabilitation is adequate housing,’’ declared Mr H. Cornwell at the quarterly meeting of members of the South Canterbury R.S.A. last night. "Now that the war against Japan is ending, the R.S.A. would be wise to convene a conference in Timaru to ascertain why houses are not being built. I have heard that the reasons are sales tax, shortage of labour and insufficient material. We need to hear from the builders what the difficulties are.” One member said that he had been informed by a builder that 10 houses could be built in 10 weeks providing labour and material were available. Ten builders could produce 100 houses in 10 weeks. Mr G. J. Walker: The problem is Dominion-wide and will have to be dealt with on a national basis. Mr Cornwell: The soldier returning to Timaru is interested in securing a home in Timaru. He does not care what is being done at Lower Hutt. The meeting agreed with Mr Cornwell that a conference should be conv e n e d.
