INCREASES IN WAGES
Two Awards Amended Orders amending the wages clauses of two awards have been issued by the Arbitration Court Adult male workers under the New Zealand builders’ labourers, quarry workers, tunnellers, and general lab- , ourers’ award are to receive an increase in pay of 31d an hour. The board and lodging allowance for country wprlhas been raised to 6 - a day, and the special country work overtime rate has been increased t°.JW money is to be paid at the rate of The. minimum hourly rates for adult male workers under the Northern, Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago and Southland flour, oatmeal, and barley mills employees’ award have also been increased by 3Jd. The increases for | youths and 'for females range from 4 - j to 10'- a week. The employees re- , presentative on the court, Mr A. L. ; Monteith expresses dissent, stating : that the female rate of £3. after adding bonus and deducting tax. leaves the worker with £2 17 3 to live on, and. in view of present prices, he does not consider this sufficient. In both cases the orders are made retrospective to April 1 last, and the rates of pay do not include the two cost-of-living bonuses.
