RETURNED VETERAN
Arrest On Old Charge NEW YORK, July 31. A veteran of three and a-half years’ overseas service and six major battles, who has just returned from Europe, has been arrested and charged with homicide during a spectacular gaol break from Sing Sing four years ago in which four persons died. He is Charles Bergstrom, aged 43, a former convict, whom the police alleged had supplied three other convicts with guns, which they used to shoot their way to freedom in 1941. Bergstrom, for whom a nation-wide hunt had continued to be made, 'served 10 years in prison, during which he met three long-termers and arranged to smuggle them guns after his release. They shot their way out of prison in a gun battle, during which a policeman and one convict Were killed. The other two were subsequently captured and electrocuted. Bergstrom disappeared and allegedly enlisted under a pseudonym. He returned from Europe on leave and was betrayed by his wife, who fearfed he would kill her.
