BUS SERVICE
Need For Development
Judging by the complaints he had received, the elimination of certain bus stops to speed up the service was an unpopular move and the reinstatement of most of them would be welcomed by the public, said Cr. J. McDougall at a meeting of the Timaru Borough Council last evening.
Timaru was growing and the bus service should grow with it, continued Cr. McDougall. Six new buses were required to cater for Timaru's present needs. The dispersal of public func-
tions resulted in the overcrowding of buses. Those who could not be accommodated became disgruntled with the service and rightly so. The Omnibus Committee was doing its best to buy new chassis but only one had been provided. The cost of the new buses should not be met solely out of rates but a revision of fares should be considered.
The chairman of the committee (Cr. W. L. Richards), said that five of the stops which had been eliminated would not be re-instated as no complaints had been received about them. They were Rhodes, Trafalgar, Rolleston, Bank and Elizabeth Streets. Six new buses would cost £lB,OOO.
