HUNTING IN SOUTH CANTERBURY

Sir.—ln a recent issue of your paper Mr C. L. Orbell states: “Orton w r as huntsman to Messrs Elworthy Bros, and paid by them.” No one should know better than Mr Orbell that the late Malcolm Orton was paid by the Hunt, Club for about the last seven years of his 21 years’ service, and during that period had to contract to the club each year. From the salary he received, £26 a month, the Whip had to be paid, and in addition, feed for both hounds and horses was paid for by the Huntsman. —I am, etc., One Who Knows.

Sir.—l would like to challenge the statement made by the Master. He says: “Orton was paid by Elworthy Bros.” A “Subscription Hunt Club” was formed as far back as 1884 and it seems very unlikely that Elworthy Bros would go on paying the Huntsman. I now ask: Who paid Orton from 1910 till be handed over to Cain Selby? “John Peel' claims that the present Huntsman is not getting as much now as Orton drew latterly. I know Jack Shaw had “cuts” In the depression and stood to the club, using his own money for improvements and upkeep at the Kennels. Have those “cuts” ever been restored ? The writers have certainly caused some interest and if the peaple who want hunting back in South Canterbury do not do something about it they are a pretty dumb lot and do not deserve to hunt.—l am. etc.. Waiting. Suh.ie.-t, to Mr 0. 1,. Orbell's right ot "'ply. il he uliooses to exercise it, (his cor n;s|,.,„<!<.nve is closed. Editor. "The Timarn lleriflil.
