Sir,—The following information may be ol interest to your correspondent "Sunshine." ill The slogan. "Sunny Timaru," has more advertising value than scientific truth. Meteorological records of the | annual average number of hours of I bright sunshine per annum show that 1 Timaru is surpassed by many places in : New Zealand, including Auckland. ' Wellington, New Plymouth, Napier. ! Nelson. Blenheim, Hokitika and Christchurch. I 12) A sunshine recorder does not ' record all the hours of sunshine during ; I which the sun is visible to the naked eye. It is, in essence, a burning glass I I and registers only bright sunshine. I (3) When the sun’s altitude is below i I three degrees, a sunshine recorder rarely registers. (4) Sites for climatological stations must have tee approval of Meteoro- i logical Office experts.
