Much Work Ahead LONDON. July 6. War work continues on a large scale, but demands from non-militarv sources assure Tvneside of at least five years of full activity after the complete switchover to peace production has been made. The lack of labour is again the main obstacle and manufacturers are competing for priority of release of skilled and semi-skilled men from the forces. While most shin.aids are busy on naval orders, a start has been made on the construction ,of nassenger cargo liners. At the Walkei Naval Yard of Vickers Armstrong two are being built and other orders are awaiting the sanction to go ahead. The builders of the world famous Mauretania, Messrs Swan. Hunter and Wigham Richardson, have laid down two passenger cargo liners at WallserM The introduction of mor? mechanical equipment has resulted in a considerable reduction of production costs which will be a valuable help in buildin,Y for peacetime. There annears to be" no shortage of nwtwrial for either building or repair work. Light engineering trades are forging ahead. Pre-war markets are being reopened and firms ar? seeking facilities to help them meet the enormous demand for their products at home and abroad.
