TEMUKA MAINTENANCE OF CEMETERY

County Attitude Described As “Niggardly” What was referred to by Mr M. S. Ansford as "the niggardly attitude" I of the Geraldine County Council In | declining to make any grant toward the upkeep of tire Temuka cemetery was the subject of comment at the monthly meeting of the Arowhenua Cemetery Trustees. Letters from the Levels County Council advising that it had decided to make a grant of £lO toward the maintenance of the ccmtery for the year ending March 31. 1945. and from the Geraldine County Council advising that it must adhere to its original decision of not making a grant this year were read bv the secretary (Mr P. G. Shave). “It seems that the Geraldine County Council do not think people should be buried because there has been a flood.” said the Mayor (Mr G. A. Harris). “The County Council is acting in a mean tvpe of way,” said Mr L. F. N. Ward. “They have eot out of it cheaply in the past' The Municipal Act states that it is the duty of every local body to maintain a cemetery. The cemetery is situated in the Borough of Temuka. and it is practically incumbent on them to contribute to its maintenance.” Mr Ansford said that it was a niggardly attitude on the part of the County Council to refuse any contribution. The matter should not be allowed to drop. Mr C. D. Hayhurst suggested that the

Mayor, who was a member of the Geraldine River Board, should act as a deputation from the Borough Council to the Geraldine County Council. This suggestion was supported by Mr R. L. Stokes, and it was agreed that, the secretary ask if the County Council would be willing to receive the Mayor as a deputation at its next meeting.
