TEMUKA GOLF LINKS

Maintenance By Domain Board Application By Club Declined A proposal by the. Tcmuka Golf Club that ilie Domain Board i-aKa over me maintenance of tnq golf links at a remuneration based on the average amount oi wages paid out oy tne ciao curing tne lasi lour years has Peen reiused by the Temuka Domain Boarci. Opinion was sharpiy tuvioea and tne decision was made on tne casting vote of the Mayor (Mr G. A. Harris'. Tne proposition was piaceti oefore the Board by a deputation consisting ol the president (L>r. A. s. Mcinnes? and the green supervisors (Messrs R. 1. McGregor and xi. P. Lee). Dr. A. g>. Mcinnes saio mat the Golf Cluo was up against difficulties at me present time ana was asking tlie Board to extend wnatever neip possible to them. The ciuo felt mac it wanted to assist returned servicemen and women to take advantage of a healthy sport. Tne game haa a lot to commend it as an assistance in the rehabilitation of returned men. They had recenly passed a resolution admitting servicemen to the club at the nominal lee of 10 and he felt sure tne Board would take this aspect of tne ease into consideration m coming to a decision. Mr R. I. McGregor said that the cluo was finding difficulty in obtaining sufficient laoour to maintain the course in a satisfactory condition. The average yeany wages paid by tlie club during the last rour years was £59 and the average, irom July 1 to Marell 31. was £3O. He considered the course could be kept in order rrom now to the end of March with 35 days' work by one man. If the Board were prepared to consider the suggestion, tlie matter would be decided at tlie annual meeting of the club. Mr Lee pointed out that there would be considerable activity in all sports after the war, and the club felt it would like to be in a position to meet the requirements of returned servicemen.

The Mayor (Mr G. A. Harris) said that the Board was most sympathetic towards the Golf Club, but any arrangement should be on a fair basis to avoid the possibility of the Board and the club oeing at loggerheads in the future. He considered 35 days to be a conservative estimate. Mr J. Gourley remarked that if the Board took over the care of the links, playing members would expect a greater degree of efficiency than in the past. They were sympathetic towards the club and would give the matter lull consideration. After the deputation had retired. Mr L. F. N. Ward said that, once the Board was loaded with the work, it would be difficult to get out of it. There was the Arbor Day planting, and the curator would need every available man if the forestry scheme were to go ahead. He considered they should not make any more commitments for the Domain staff. They should advise the club that they were not able to carry out the work . Mr D. C. Clark supported Mr Ward. Mr T. N. Scott said that the club paid £56 for the lease of the links and reaped the benefit of £45 by sub-leas-ing the area for grazing. The Mayor: We would i.il like io help the Goll Club, but there would 1» many difficulties in providing no labour. I have received a request from the croquet club that we taxe over the care of their green. After fuller discussion an amendment by Messrs Stokes and J ■.urJey "that tlie offer of the golf club be accepted up to March 31. 1946. uoicit to no Saturday work and to the inpi".xal of the curator.” was lost in laiotir of the original motion by Messrs Ward and Clark, "that the proposal be nM accepted."

Peace Celebrations The Tcmuka Borough Council has decided that it will not be officiallv represented at the next meeting ol the Peace Celebrations Committee. "When peace finally does come, I intend to call a public meeting to make arrangements for a fitting celebration." said the Mayor (Mr G. A. Harris) at the Council meeting. "If any organisation cares to arrange a spontaneous celebration on its own accord, it is entitled to do so. and. as councillors, we can take part privately. Would the Fire Brigade be prepared to cooperate at a later date with the Council? Cr. R. L. Stokes: Please do not think that it is only the Fire Brigade that is moving in the matter. The Mayor: The Fire Brigade called the meeaing and the attendance was nearly all Fire Brigade members. There was not one representative ol the business people. Cr. M. S. Ansford: If a public meeting is called by the Mayor as soon as Japan is out of the war. I think the committee will be quite satisfied The Mayor: I will give you that assurance. Damage Widespread Another record frost of 22 degrees was experienced in Temuka yesterdav morning. The cumulative effects of the series of heavy frosts lias caused widespread damage to water pipes, taps and hot water cisterns, and many houses were flooded by pipes bursting above ceilings. There were few people yesterday without at least one burst tap or water pipe and plumbers were run off their feet answering urgent demands for their services. Even inside taps were frozen and refused to run. In the country electric pumping outfits were out of action. Street Lighting

A report setting out additional street lights required in order of priority was tabled by the chairman of the Lighting Committee (Cr. R. L. Stokes) at the monthly meeting of the Borough Council. The Town Clerk (Mr P. G. Shavei said that he had interviewed the chairman of the South Canterbury Powei Board (Mr J. M. Bishop), who said that there was no material available at present. , It was decided to make application for necesssarv material and to install the lights as' soon as it became available. Returned Man Welcomed Sapper G. B. Andrews, who arrived bv train yesterday, was met at *he station and welcomed by the Mayor (Mr G 4 Harris). He was taken prisoner in Italy shortly before the capitulation of that cotmtry to the Allies.
