Adrien Tixierl sain that lhe Moslem nationalist risings, though serious, had been grossly and systematically exaggerated by the enemies of France, both throughout Algeria and abroad. .He added that French casualties were 88 killed and 15- wounded. The Moslem casualties were 1500, according to a. local French civilian estimate, but only 500 according to a local French military estimate. Forty-four Moslem villages with a total population oi’ less Lian 3000 were bombed. Less than 20 per cent of the native population directly or indirectly participated in the lising. The French troops called in to restore order had not exceeded 10,000. A total of 24'59 ' Moslems were arrested and 44 have so far been sentenced i to death, but the Ministry of Justice ; was ready to consider all appeals for j clemency. ________
