RESIGNATION OF CHENNAULT
Investigation Sought 18.40 p.m.) NEW YORK. July 18. The Senate Military Affairs Committee will investigate the resignation of Lieutenant-General Claire Chennault. former U.S. Comman-der-in-Chief in China, says the Washington correspondent of the New York "Herald-Tribune.” Senator Ellender (Democrat. Louisiana). who requested the investigation, said he wanted to know' if MajorGeneral G. E. Stratemeyer was appointed Air Force Commander in China because he was a West Point graduate and Lieutenant-General Chennault only a reservist. He added: “I think Lieutenant-General Chennault quit in anger because of the change in command. I want to know the effect of the resignation on the war effort in China." Some committee members believed that the Chennault case to be not merely a military matter, but it had an internal political phase.
