Slight Increase Shown Estimates of the aggregate .salaries and wages for 1944-45, given in the Abstract of Statistics, place the amount at £17(5,500,000, an increase of about 140 per cent, on the 1935-36 figure. Salaries and wages in 1943-44 totalled £175.900.000 and in 1942-43 the total was £154,700,000. The aggregate value of salaries and wages for the year 1944-45 shows a relatively small increase compared with increases recorded during recent years. Other income of individuals in 194344 (the latest available) amounted to £59.800,000 compared with £58.500.000 the previous year. The sum ol £17,400,000 was paid out in social security benefits in 1944-45, an increase of £1,700,000 on the 1943-44 figure. Company income during the 12 months to March 31, 1944. including income tax payments totalled £40,990,000, a rise of £4,000,009. The total of all income for Ihe year ended March 31. 1944. was £292,300.000, compared with £2(54,400,000 the previous year and £124,600.000 in the 12 months to March 31. 1936. Taxation from all sources yielded £108.(581.814 last veai compared with £100.83X484 in 1943-44. and £87.940,844 in 1942-43. In the year ended March 31, 1941. the total revenue from taxation wa£(51.360.840, War taxation has risen from £2,181,836 in 1939-40 to E48.732.35i! in 1944-45.
