Housing Shortage.—Tire housing shortage was tragic, said the Mayor (Mr A. E. 3. Hanan) yesterday. He had received inquiries for dwellings and rooms from seven returned men. He would be pleased to receive any offer of assistance that would help to house' ex-serviceman. Persons with rooms and houses to let should advise him. Revolted Seagulls.— Worm casts proved such a nuisance on a bowling green at Papatoetoe that it was decided to deal with the cause. A weak solution of bluestone over the grass gave results greater than anticipated and a sequel equally surprising. Thousands of dead worms covered the green following the application of the poison. They attracted flocks of seagulls. But the noisoned worms began to disagree with the birds and many nad difficulty in flying off. Soon the. unusual sight was seen of the seagulls rapidly disgorging their meal in a neighbouring paddock.

Magistrate's Court.—Be lore Mr D. McLennan, J.P., at the Timaru Magistrates Court yesterday, Gordon Hamilton Moffat, who appeared voluntarily on a charge of being found with liquor in his possession in the vicinity of a dance hall at St. Andrews when a dance was in progress, was fined £1 and costs 11/-. Edwin Martin Harvey Nicholson, a steward, appeared on remand on two charges: (1) That on December 19, 1944, at Auckland, he failed to comply with the terms of maintenance orders for the support of his wife and child, arrears due to September 20. 1944, amounting to £74.12/- ai.d '2l that on or about February 22, 1945, at Auckland, while undergoing treatment for a venereal disease, he failed to submit himself for treatment as directed. On the application of Senior-Sergeant S. King the accused was remanded till July 26. Professional Women’s Club.—An instructive half-year has been completed by the “Business and Professional Women’s Club.” Comment .ng with a social evening at the 11. are of Mrs Mavo, “Books of the Year” were featured by Miss A. K. Elliot. A drama, evening followed, skilfully given by Miss id. Ingl’:. Gardening was the main nlc of the May' meeting, when Mr B Pearson gave the club some very interesting points. Mr P. W. Rule r-ive an evening on "The Book Beautiful." when he displayed and discussed •many rare and beautiful books. The next subject was “Blood Transfusion," when Mr J. H. Ward. Public Hospital, gave a talk accompanied with illustrations. From “Braille to Music" was featured by Mr Inglis Todd, who, accompanied by Miss D. Nichol, gave an outline of his work with Braille and its translation into music. Several violin items were pleasingly given. Tn addition to its other activities the club gave a quantity of tinr-d food to the National Council of Women to be forwarded to Britain.
