Women’s Institute At the July meeting of the Peel Forest Women's Institute Mrs Heney presided and welcomed visitors, also two new members—Mrs Mac Gibbon and Mrs Fagan. Soldiers’ parcels were packed and dispatched and letters of thanks were received from men overseas. A letter was received from Mrs Tripp thanking members for a tin of honey sent by them which she was giving to a camp for repatriated prisoners of war. A discussion took place on the question of amalgamation with the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, and members decided against the proposal. Competitions resulted:—Best bottle of plums. Mrs Cairns 1. Mrs Simpson 2; most plums in bottle. Mrs Simpson 1. Mrs Cairns 2. Mrs Fagan 3: winter posy. Miss R. Reid 1, Mrs Reid 2, Mrs C. Wooding 3; bloom. Miss S. Allan 1. Miss R. Reid 2, Mrs C. Wooding 3; truss. Miss R. Reid 1. Mrs Reid 2, Mrs C. Wooding 3; wandering shilling. Miss M. Tucker. The Snowstorm After a heavy nor'-west gale on Friday last , accompanied by heavy rain, snow began to fall about 9 p.m. and continued until daybreak, recording a fall of 18 inches to 2ft. Telegraph wires are down in numerous places and it may be some weeks before they are in order again. The linesmen had power restored by Tuesday niuht. The Rangitata Gorge is still isolated, snow having drifted into the cuttings to a depth of six to seven feet, making transport impossible except, on horses. People on the flat country are busy hand-feeding stock. Brilliant sunshine has prevailed each day with an absence of wind and heavy frosts at night. The rainfall for the month of June was .79 inches and to date for July 1.69 inches.
