RACING ON AND OFF THE TRACK

The Awapuni-trained gelding, Sterling Lad. is now in W. P. Hogans stable Tlie idea of racing Pink Clover at Awapuni has been abandoned, and he will have his next start at the Soutli Canterbury Hunt meeting. Sleepy Fox will leave Auckland shortly to contest the weight-for-age races at Randwick. After August 1, apprentice allowances will be claimable in handicap races worth less than £4OO to the winner. Flying Hawk, who is expected to make his fust South Island appearance in the Hadlow Hurdles, two years ago won the Feilding Cup 7.6 i and Goodbehere Handicap 8.3. Thirty-one horses have been nominated lor the Pareora Hunters’ Plate. This is largely in excess of the safety number, but the majority of the 31 are engaged in one of the jumping races and a division is not apprehended. Horses running at the Hunt meeting at Washdyke will be able to go on to Riccarton on the night of the races 11’ loaded by 6 p.m. C. G. Humphries has arrived at Washdyke from Riccarton with Gulf Stream, The Vulture. Maggiore, Gay Fort, Silver Sal and other horses. Mr R. Jeffares, owner of Rakanui and Reorapa. had a leg broken when Iramutu. which he was riding back to Greenmeadows after attending a hunt, silled and threw him. Quixotic, who won the Victorian Grand National, is out of Miss Quex, a New Zealand-bred mare by Lord Quex. The abnormal season in Australia has brought trouble for breeders. At one South Australian stud six mares out of 20 had slipped their foals by •Tune, and deaths are reported everywhere. Abdicate, who had been trained lately by his owner at Levin, was handed over to E. J. Ellis until after the Grand National meeting. He returned to his old quarters at Washdyke, but is temporarily at Oamaru. Twenty-one Winter Cup candidates have been nominated for the Claremont Handicap at the Hunts meeting. Included are the four Cup top-weights —High Play, First In, Immediate and Royal Flight; and eight of those weighted at 9.0 or over in the Riccarton race.

The attempt to patch up Half and Half has been abandoned, and entries made for the steeplechases at Washdyke have been cancelled. The Balboa gelding will best be remembered for his three-figure dividend when he beat his stable-mate Boloyna (favourite) on the post in the Claremont Handicap. For his Whyte Handicap win, Ramicourt has been raised 141 b in the Winter Cup. The minimum is 71b higher, but the scale is only 41b higher, and Ramicourt's increase represents 101 b. Bridge Acre (second in the Whyte) is relatively 71b higher, and Gulf Stream has received the same advancement for his second in the sprint. Platform has been given relief to the extent of 41b, and Amorlad 31b. Martial Note, now owned in North Canterbury and trained at Studholme, is a Battle Song three-year-old. He furnishes a striking illustration of bad placing. With only one maiden win to his credit, he was raced in open company' at the Wellington Cup meeting. Carrying 31b overweight, he finished third to High Play, and started favourite in the same class on the third day. As a result he was weighted at 9.13 in a hack race at Dunedin. Perhaps the most popular betting system is backing the mounts of a leading jockey. Anybody who makes a profit in this manner is extraordinarily lucky. In Melbourne this season A. Breasley has had what is termed a phenomenal run and has ridden 50 winners. But he has had more than 200 rides, and has averaged less than one win in four. The average price of Breasley mounts is much less than 4 to 1. For his win in the Wellington Steeplechase, Master Meruit has been raised 141 b in the Grand National. Strip (2nd and subsequent! - . 3rd in the July) has gone up 71b; "Kanui te Pai Ord) is lifted 21b; and Foxiana (4th) lib. Of the unplaced lot, Sir Percy has been promoted. 21b, Nok.o 11b and Town Survey 21b. Horses which did not race at Trentham have been treated thus: Rival up 51b. Khurja up 21b, Albino up 41b, Stewaid up 51b. Those let up include Ramillies 41b. Indian Sun 81b. Abbey Lu 41b, Lapidarian 41b. For her second in the Mariri and win in the July, Kilmanagh has been advanced 131 b; and for his Ist in the Mariri and second in the July, Tenorman has been promoted the equivalent of 201 b. RICCARTON NOTES (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, July 18. Though the process is slow, the coating of snow with which the course at Riccarton is covered shows signs of dispersing. The weather continues fine, with hard frosts at night. It is hoped that the sand track will be available soon for light work With the tracks here temporarily not fit for work the trainers are forced with a problem in preparing their teams for the combined hunts meeting, which will be held at Washdyke next week and will be a preliminary for the Grand National meeting, opening a week later. Some of the Riccarton trainers are talking of a shift to Washdyke, in the hope that, with the fall of snow less severe there than it was here they' will have a better chance of getting on with some training work.

A yearling colt by Wild Chase from I Good Sight, a sister to Cricket Bat and Ball Dress, by Winning' Hit-Equip-I ment, has arrived from Stonyhurst ! Stud and has joined the team of H. I and A. Cutts. Another arrival from Stonyhurst is the yearling filly, Mestiza, by Wild ! Chase-Mulatto, by Nigger Minstrel. . Owing to shortage of labour. H. and A. i Cutts are fully taxed to care for the horses of Mr J. B. Douglas Clifford, so Mrs H. B. Douglas, the breeder of Mestiza, has placed the filly in T. 11. Gillett's stable. Desert Strife, a four-year-old mare by Bulandshar from Rivalry, has finished racing and has returned to Stonyhurst, where she will take up .stud life. She was a good galloper but though she was a winner, she did not realise expectations. She may, however, make amends as a matron. Niepcr by the committee of the Avondale Jockey Club in connection with the ownership of the racehorse Good Fun. A similar penalty was imposed on the horse. Hayvice and Nipper were charged under Rule 338, paragraph 16. of the Rules of Racing with corrupt practice. Good Fun, which had been racing in the name of Hayvice, gave promise of developing into one of the best hurdlers seen out this season. The question of the horse’s ownership developed shortly after her easy win at Ellerslie on April 7. AH hough she was accepted for in sub- cement events, she did not start.
