FLASHES DURING SNOW

Sir,— Early on Saturday morning, between 3 and 4.30. while it was snowing heavily, I saw an unusual sight in the form of a very bright light overhead. This appeared several times, the first occasion being when the lights went out in Timaru. The second one was about 20 minutes later and the others were at different intervals until about 4.30. The first light In the south lit up the whole town brighter than daylight. It had an orange colour, later turning to bright white and lasted more than two minutes. The atmosphere was quite hot while the lights lasted and it was very dark after they faded away. I am very curious to find out what i saw and to learn if anyone else witnessed the phenomenon.— l am, etc., Night Owl.
