OUTBREAK OF TYPHUS

Situation In Vienna Allied Aid Sought By Telegraph—N.Z l-'r'-s- As-n <, g;; . PARIS. July 16“Typhus has broken out in | Vienna." said M. Jean Lambert j (personal representative of Dr. | Renner, head of the Austriap Provisional Government). M. Lambert is visiting Paris on his way to Lon- j don and Washington, which have i not yet recognised the Kenner Government. He drew a dark picture of me situation in Vienna. There were only 12 municipal lorries lor the distribution of loou throughout the city, he said. The same lack of transport had resulted m the accumulation oi ruubish | for weeks. Throughout the city oi Vienna children played on rubbish heaps which were nnested with flies. Official employees nad not received salaries since me liberation of Vienna, as the Russian repatriation commission had claimed ail sank assets. “The Russians regarded ah Austrian property as spoils oi war. and accordingly they have requisitioned and taken off almost ail live stock, machines and vehicles.” said M. Lambert. “We do nor complain about this, which is the fortune ol war, but if ue are to keep Austria alive and complete the Republic founded in 1918 we need help from the Allies. The Russians at one factory removed ail except 40 of 5000 machines of all kinds, including telephones.” Russian Attitude He gave unqualified praise to the Russian attitude in political affairs because. he said, the Russians had brought Austria political freedom. The Renner Government was not established at the ! behest of the Russians, but had come into being almost spontaneously to prevent complete anarchy. Laws which the Government adopted were always .submitted to the Russians, but so far the Russians had not interfered. M. Lambert complained ot leniency towards Austrian Nazis in the British and American zones. “Our police arrest them and hand them to the British and the Americans, who frequently release them." lie said. "This cannot happen in the Russian zone, because the Russians accept our decisions. “Three thousand six hundred leading Nazis are at present in prison awaiting trial. The small fry have to register and are given work in labour gangs, cleaning up Vienna.” The Austrian workers were predominantly Socialist rather than Communist, he said. Elections for factory committees had resulted in Communists not obtaining 10 per cent of the votes.
