CONDITIONS IN DOMINION
Australian’s Impressions (7.30 p.m.) SYDNEY. July 18. Morn Australian publicity is urgently needed in New Zealand, said Mr E. K. White, a member of the Federal executive of the Liberal Party who has returned to Australia after visits to both the North and South Islands. Mr White’s impressions during his tour include: New Zealanders show “a certain resigned acceptance" of many socialistic and bureaucratic controls. The Government has done its best to see that returned servicemen get a fair and generous deal. The nationalisation of banking and industry is just as "hot" a subject as in Australia. Food is more plentiful than in Australia. A hotel meal costing 2 6 in New Zealand would cost 5 - to 6 - in Australia. Many good quality houses are being built, but builders claim that they could be erected far more cheaply by private enterprise. The houses are rented from the Government and the sense of security resulting from personal ownership is lacking. New Zealand is “bitten with the same tariff fiug" as Australia, importing the absolute minimum of goods and exporting the maximum output of primary products.
