ROYAL VISITORS TO ULSTER
Rousing Welcome 'Rec. 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 17. the King and Queen, accompanied by Princess Elizabeth, arrived by air on a. victory visit to Northern Ireland. It was the first time the Sovereign arrived in Northern Ireland by air and Princess Elizabeth’s first flight. The Royal party travelled in a silver Dakota, escorted by two squadrons of Polish-piloted Mustangs. During the two-hour flight from Northolt th" King and Princess Elizabeth visited the pilot’s cabin and talked with the pilot, Squadron Leader S. R Hinks The Princess was thrilled by her first experience in an aircraft. Upon their arrival at Long Kesh Airport. 12 miles from Belfast, the Royal Standard was broken from the nose of the King’s plane as it taxied along the runway. The Duke of Abercorn (Governor) and Sir Basil Brooke (Prime Minister) welcomed the King who was wearing the uniform of a marshal of the Royal Air Force. The Royal visitors shook hands with the Marquess of Londonderry (Leader of the Senate) and the heads of the three fighting Services in Ulster. The Air Training Corps Band plaved the National Anthem as R.A.F. and W.A.A.F. personnel gave a rousing welcome to the Royal visitors. Their Majesties will attend a session of the Northern Ireland Senate, where the King will address both Houses of Parliament. Princess Elizabeth will witness the ceremony from a special seat. The King will later hold an investiture, decorating Ulstermen with awards for gallantry and also hand to Sir Basil Brooke a Military Cross won by his son. who was killed in action.
