CHANGE OF NAME

A Parliamentary Select Committee (F.0.P.R.) WELLINGTON. July 18. Among the Parliamentary Select Committees appointed each session is the Native Affairs Committee, and in setting it up in the House to-day the Minister of Native Affairs (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason) altered the word “native” to “Maori.” stating that although this seemed a trifling formality it was more in accord with the position of the Maori people in New Zealand and their pride of race. It was preferable to the indefinite word which it would replace. The change was strongly commended by the Hon. E. T. Tirikatene, representative of the Maori race on the Executive Council. He felt, he said, that the Minister was doing something which his people would regard as notable, and it would meet with their high approval. Answering a member who reminded the speaker that there was still -the Native Trustee and Native Land Court, Mr Tirikatene replied that the same viewpoint should prevail, and the excellent standard set bv the Native Minister could be followed still further.
