LATE MR J. DUNCAN

Former Timaru Businessman The death occurred at Oamaru recently of Mr James Duncan, aged 57. formerly manager of the Bristol Piano Company, Ltd.. Timaru, a position he occupied until the firm closed down, when he purchased the Oamaru branch. He continued in business there and as | representative of the Singer Sewing '. Machine Company Ltd. until his death I after a short illness. Mr Duncan, who was a son of the ■ late Mr and Mrs George Duncan, of Studholme Junction, was born at Kakanui. He was educated at the Timaru South School, the Timaru Main School and the Totara School. After some years with the Taieri and Peninsula Dairy Company. Ltd., at Oamaru. Mr Duncan became head buttermaker at the Apiti and Napier factories. Later he accepted a position with the Singer Sewing Machine Co. Ltd. and subsequently was appointed manager of the Bristol Piano Co. Ltd., at Timaru. He was an enthusiastic member of the Kia Toa Bowling Club and was keenly interested in Freemasonry. In Oamaru he took part in numerous community activities. During the last war he organised concerts for patriotic purposes and was a member of the Soldiers' Aid Association. A keen sportsman. he was at one time a member of the Council of the Waitaki Acclimatisation Society. Mr Duncan was a director of the Star-Bowkett Building Society. He maintained his interest in bowling and was a member of the Phoenix Club. His enthusiastic work in Freemasonry led to his occubving. among other offices, the position of Deputy-Provin-cial Grand Master of Otago. Mr Duncan is survived by his wife and one daughter. Mrs A. Evies, of Hawke's Bay. and two 'brothers. Messrs W. Duncan and J. G. Duncan, of Timaru.
