Reference to the death of Mr H. M. Whatman, for many years a member of the Waimate County Council, was made at the monthly meeting of the Levels County Council this week by the chairman, Mr R. G. Cleland. Mr Whatman was a man who devoted a great deal of time to public affairs, and he gave his services ungrudgingly over a long period of years, said Mr Cleland A motion of sympathy with the relatives and with the Waimate County Council was carried in silence. Reference to the impending departure of Mr R. N. Downes, a member of the literary staff of "The Timaru Herald,” was made by the chairman of the Levels County Council, Mr R. G. Cleland, at the monthly meeting on Wednesday, Mr Cleland said that Mr Downes had been reporting meetings of the Council for more than 20 years, and he had always given the ratepayers a good account of the work of the Council. He wished Mr Downes every success in his new position.
