Sapper Theodore Williams

Sapper Theodore John Charles Williams, who was killed in action in Italy on May 1, was the eldei' son of Mr and Mrs Morris Williams, Geraldine. He belonged to an old Canterbury family, his grandfather, the late Mr Charles Hood Williams, for many years secretary and treasurer of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, being one of those who arrived in the Randolph, the second of the First Four Ships. His other grandparents, the late Mr and Mrs Sandee. of Ashburton, were also old settlers. Born on July 31, 1908, Sapper Williams was educated at the Geraldine District High School, and took an active part

in the Geraldine Boy Scouts. In his younger days he was keen with the rod and gun. On leaving school Sapper Williams learnt his trade with Messrs Peter Graham and Son, builders, of Christchurch. Later he joined the Public Works Department as a leading carpenter and was engaged on main highways maintenance work throughout Canterbury, which made him a fairly frequent visitor to his nome town. In 1941 he went with the Public Works unit to Fiji to prepare landing strips for aeroplanes, and after a further period of service with the Public Works Department, he left for Italy last year. While with the Works Department, Sapper Williams was responsible for a major part in the invention of a machine for marking white lines on the roads. In June, 1936,; Sapper Williams married Miss Olive Worthington, of Cashmere Hills, Christchurch. He leaves a widow and one daughter.
