SIX MEN FINED

Caught Playing Two-up (N.Z.P.A.) HASTINGS, May 29. Six men caught in a police raid on a two-up school in a vacant section in Karamu road were charged in the Magistrate’s Court this morning with playing or betting on a game of chance. All pleaded guilty. They were: Jack Thear and Harry Francis Lowe, both of whom wrote pleading guilty; John Harold Swiggs and Michael Meria, both of whom were represented by counsel; Sonny Raroa, who was the only defendant to make an appearance in person; and Malta Detective-Sergeant Campin said that after complaints, the police kept a watch and caught the six men playing in full view of the street. “They were playing two-up, the so-called New Zealand national game,” said the police officer.
