BULK POWER CHARGES

Conference With Minister Suggested

In a report to be considered by the Timaru Borough Council on Monday evening the Electricity Committee recalled that it had been decided to approach the Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P., to obtain his views on what action should next be taken to press home to the Minister of Works (the Hon. R. Semple) the inequality of power charges. Mr Carr replied to the Town Clerk (Mi- E. A. S. Killick) as follows:

“Replying to your letter of April 20, I would advise you that I shall be communicating shortly with the secretary of the Decentralisation of Industries Sub-committee in Wellington, inquiring what steps are being taken to communicate to the Government the decision of the committee at its last meeting to support the representations then made to the committee by the Borough Electrical Engineer, Mr R. D. Veitcji, for a reduction in bulk electricity supply charges to the smaller supply authorities.

“It would appear to me that, the committee’s decision having been represented to the Government, it would be desirable for your electrical engineer to place before the Minister of Works, preferably by personal interview, which I would endeavour to arrange, the evidence that your Mr Veitch gave personally to the committee.

“As the committee is desirous of hearing Mr Veitch on the light metals industry at its next meeting, I would suggest that the one visit to Wellington of your engineer might cover both engagements.” The committee has recommended that Mr Veitch confer with Mr Carr and report further.
