ITALIAN LABOURERS
Payment Increased (Rec. 8.15 p.m.) CANBERRA, Apr. 19. The contribution to be paid by Australian rural employers using the services of Italian prisoners of war as permanent labour has been increased from ill a week, plus keep, to £2 a week, plus keep. For seasonal work the ruling district contract or piecework rates will "e paid. Announcing the introduction of the new rates as from June 1. the Federal Minister of Labour (Mr E. J. Holloway) said that the previous payments were ti.'ied iii consideration ot inexperience <>t Italian prisoners and their Inability to speak the English language. Now. however, the time for some upward revision had arrived. Italian prisoners must not be employed where suitable Australian labour is available.
